Message from the Superintendent On Thursday, night the School Committee approved the Superintendent’s recommendation to non-renew two teaching contracts due to program reorganization. During the 2017-2018 school year, BPS updated its Physical Education and Health Curriculum. As part of this work, it was determined that the District fell below the State’s required 100 minutes of PE and Health instruction per week at the K-3 level. In an effort to increase health and physical education instructional minutes, the District needs to thoroughly analyze all K-3 building schedules. Out of an abundance of caution, layoff notices were issued to a part-time elementary music and a part-time elementary art teacher. By law, notices need to be delivered to any teacher who has the potential of being non-renewed for the following school year by June 1st. As we complete the building schedules this summer, we will determine if there is an ability to recall these positions. It is important to note that all art and music programs will continue for all elementary students, as well as for students at the secondary levels. Important Updates Reading Week is this week. We are kicking it off with a visit from the Town Children’s Librarian tomorrow morning. The most important thing your child can do over the summer is read. Please encourage your child to read over the summer, and I encourage you to read to them as well. Please send in a white tee shirt for your child – please mark their name on the inside.
